Re-Render, Repaint or Overspray – Which Comes Out on Top?

re render, repaint or overspray – which comes out on top?

With constant battering from the wind and rain, rendered walls will always become worn over time. That can lead to discolouration and cracks, not to mention the risk of further damage as water begins to get through – which is why it’s important to get something done about it.

Traditionally, you have two main options – repaint the outside of your building or re-render the walls entirely. Corksol’s innovative SprayCork solution provides a third option in this scenario – an overspray.

But the question still remains – which is best for your home? In this article, we’ll discuss the advantages of each option and weigh things up in terms of cost.

Repainting your home

The first option is repainting. This is often the first on people’s minds too, given that it’s the cheapest. It’s fair to say this is the biggest advantage of repainting your house too. Compared to the other options, it will definitely save you money for the short term.

Repainting your home is quick and relatively easy. It can be completed as a DIY job if you have access to a suitable ladder, along with the right paint and brushes. Or you can get a professional to take care of it for a small extra cost.

Other than the low cost, the main benefit delivered by repainting your exterior walls is a fresh look. It will cover over marks and cracks for the time being and refresh the appearance of your house. That will improve the kerb appeal if you’re looking to sell in the near future – delivering an average return on investment of 55%.

Additionally, paint is available in a choice of colours. When repainting your house, you’re free to choose whichever colour takes your fancy – from neutrals and greys to more vibrant colours like red, green or blue.

The downside of repainting? As you might expect, it doesn’t last particularly long. Within a few years, you’ll need to add another lick of paint to your walls. On top of that, it doesn’t cure underlying issues like cracks, nor does it provide any additional benefits like heat and noise resistance.

Re-rendering your walls

The next option is re-rendering. Like repainting your walls, it provides a fresh look in a choice of colours. Most modern renders are available in a full spectrum of shades, offering almost as much freedom as paint itself. On top of that, it will also eliminate cracks in existing render, which will be stripped off before adding a fresh coat.

The most obvious benefit of re-rendering over repainting is longevity. With a high-quality coat of render on your walls, you can expect upwards of 15 years before you need to think about painting, rendering or overspraying again.

Unfortunately, that does come at a cost. Re-rendering your walls means removing the existing render. It also requires fixtures like soffits, fascia boards and gutters to be removed, before the new render is applied in multiple layers.

As a result, re-rendering is the most expensive of the three options. In fairness, there’s an argument to say it’s still more cost-effective than re-painting, as you won’t need to continually refresh your render over the years – so you get more back for your investment.

What about overspraying?

Now onto the third and final option – overspraying your existing render with SprayCork. First and foremost, this provides the advantages of both exterior paint and traditional re-rendering.

  • SprayCork is available in a choice of colours
  • It will add a fresh look to your walls on the outside
  • Any cracks in your existing render will be repaired
  • You can expect it to last well over 15 years with a guarantee for that length of time

So, what about the cost? Believe it or not, overspraying with SprayCork is actually cheaper than re-rendering your house. That’s because you don’t necessarily need to remove the existing render or fixtures to get the job done.

As long as your home’s render is structurally intact, SprayCork can be applied on top of it with no problems. The solution will remedy existing cracks in your render as well as providing a smooth, uniform coat on top. Even better, it resists future cracking. Because cork is naturally flexible, there’s far less chance of cracks appearing in years to come.

But that’s not all…

The additional benefits of overspraying

Render and paint have been formulated with specific jobs in mind – basic protection of your walls, a fresh appearance in a choice of colours, and a trade-off between cost and longevity. Corksol’s overspray goes beyond this, with a range of benefits that puts it in a different league…

Insulative

We’ll start with insulation. As the name suggests, SprayCork is made using cork, which is an impressively insulative natural material. Having an insulative layer of cork-based overspray on your walls will stop heat escaping, which will reduce your heating bills over time. On top of that, it prevents noise coming in from outside your building, whether that’s traffic, neighbours or just wind and rain.

Highly resistant

Cork’s unique cellular structure also makes it resistant to liquids. Think wine stoppers, preventing the good stuff from escaping. Because of that, it provides a waterproof coating for your walls, as well as preventing issues like algae build up which occur when moisture is present. Our sprayed cork coating also has no reaction to salt, so there’s no worry of discolouration from salty seawater spray.

Eco-friendly

On top of everything else, SprayCork is eco-friendly and sustainable. Cork is extracted from the bark of cork oak trees, which is stripped without the need to fell the trees themselves. As the cork-rich bark grows back over the next decade, it absorbs more CO2 from the environment. No deforestation, no harmful chemicals – just natural, sustainably sourced materials.
