how to insulate exterior walls in 4 simple steps

Adding insulation to exterior walls is a great way to improve the thermal efficiency of your home. It reduces the amount of heat escaping through the walls, keeping you warmer and potentially lowering your energy bills over time. Because insulation requires a coat of render, it can also improve the appearance of your home from the outside.

Normally, this can be achieved in four steps. In this post, we’ll outline those steps but also highlight how Corksol’s Spray Coating can make thing a lot easier.

1. Preparation

Before adding exterior wall cladding insulation, your walls will need to be prepared. This includes smoothing any existing render – or taking it off if it’s not strong enough – as well as removing pipework.

In most cases, temporary downpipes will be installed while the work is being carried out, to stop water running down the walls. Finally, a carrier tray will be installed at the bottom point where your external wall insulation will begin.

2. Insulation

The next step is to install the insulation boards onto your exterior walls. This is done by applying a layer of adhesive to the boards before fitting them on the wall. Additional fixings will also be added to hold the boards in place, providing extra strength alongside the adhesive.

Boards will need to be cut to shape to fit around fixtures like windows and doors. It’s also important that boards don’t obstruct any vents, as these are a crucial feature of your home’s walls. In many cases, beading will be used to keep the insulative cladding tight around these fixtures.

3. Rendering

After adding exterior insulation to existing walls, the next step is to apply a coat of render. This will strengthen the structure of the exterior insulation, while also improving the appearance of the walls from the outside.

4. Finishing touches

The final step is to reinstall the pipework which was removed while the exterior wall insulation was being added. Some small adjustments might be needed on pipework and windowsills to compensate for the extra cladding on your walls. It’s also important that any gaps are sealed where pipework runs through the render.

Could it be easier?

From cutting thick boards to adjusting fixtures, adding exterior insulation typically requires a lot of time and effort. Thankfully, there is an easier way. Corksol Spray Coating provides exterior wall insulation without the need for insulation boards. That means fewer steps and much less hassle with no need to adjust windowsills and pipework.

Best of all, there’s no compromise on performance. Our Corksol Spray Coating is currently undergoing thermal efficiency testing to confirm the exact U-Values, however with our new funding we hope to develop this by next summer. The cork spray is also naturally breathable. This is crucial when you’re adding exterior wall insulation, as it ensures the walls are still ventilated. In other words, they won’t trap moisture inside, which can lead to further issues like damp and mould.
